Welcome to our week by week pregnancy guide! Every week we’ll be updating you with how your baby is growing and your body is changing during pregnancy. This week, we explore what you can expect when you’re 2 weeks pregnant.
As we explained last week, during the time that your nurse would class as your second week of pregnancy, you are not actually pregnant! This is because your pregnancy is calculated from the first day of your last period and conception usually occurs 14 days afterwards.
So at the beginning of this week, your uterus will be forming a blood-rich lining of tissue in order to support a fertilized egg. This egg will only be fertilized if it comes into contact with one of your partners’ sperm. This sperm will have had to have survived a difficult ten hour journey to get to your egg. Once the sperm has managed to burrow through the outer membrane of the egg, their nuclei will then fuse together. The fertilized egg will then travel down the fallopian tube into the uterus whilst dividing into 16 identical cells.
So, if you’re planning to get pregnant, now is the time to make it happen. Take advantage of your ovulation by having sex between 72 hours before you ovulate and 24 hours afterwards. Don’t be dis-heartened if you can’t get pregnant as it can often take up to a year of trying before you conceive. You should also make sure you know everything you need to know about how to have a healthy baby. Make sure you have cut out all of those unhealthy lifestyle choices - so stub out that cigarette and stock up on veggies!
