How often does the average Brit feel fit as a fiddle?

People Riding On Bikes

According to our recent survey, most Brits only feel ‘fit as a fiddle’ nine times a month - that’s around 21 days each month of feeling down or fatigued. In fact, 1 in 5 adults claim they lack energy throughout the whole week. Whether that’s due to work, relationships, diet or any other factors, this is a worrying statistic that will resonate with many of us.

- Stop Reaching For The Bottle

We also discovered that it’s common for Brits to turn to alcohol when they’ve had a bad day or they are stressed. In fact, 1 in 5 adults admitted to reaching for the bottle when they’re feeling down. Although alcohol might provide instant relief from any stresses in your life, it’s also a depressant that is guaranteed to make you feel even worse the next day. Alcohol can also have a negative impact on your sleep, which could also affect your mood and stress levels the next morning.

- Sleepless Nights Can Impact Other Areas Of Your Wellbeing

Lack of sleep is the leading cause of Brits not feeling in top condition in the mornings, closely followed by stress. Such factors can cause your social life to spiral alongside your work and home life. A huge 43% of adults admitted to cancelling plans with their friends because they weren’t feeling great, but it’s important we keep a healthy social life in order to maintain our mental wellbeing.

How To Boost Your Mental And Physical Wellbeing - 7 Days A Week

If you think your physical and mental health is suffering from any of the above factors, and perhaps even your social life, there are certain steps you can take to combat this and take control of your wellbeing.

Get A Better Night's Sleep

During our survey, a lack of sleep came out as the number one reason for adults not feeling 100%. There are a few simple ways in which you can try to improve your sleep, but you’ll need to look at how long you sleep for alongside the quality of your sleep.

Simply going to bed earlier can help you rack up a few more hours of snooze, whereas the quality of your sleep could be impacted by what you do in the evening. Exercise is important in all aspects of your life, but you might struggle to sleep if you exercise too late in the evening. Your quality of sleep could also suffer if you spend too much time on your computer or phone before bed, so why not try reaching for a good book instead?

Find A Work-Life Balance That Works For You

It might be easier said than done, but if you don't take some time to yourself then your mood will subsequently suffer, as will your mental health. You can do simple things to make a difference, like going for a walk at lunchtime or arranging time to see your friends and family after work. It’s also important to take some time for yourself in the evening. Try switching off your work emails and having a relaxing bath instead.

Alongside this, you should try to prioritise your time better at work and make your workspace comfortable. After all, a tidy workspace equals a tidy mind. Finding the right work-life balance is different for everyone, and it’s very much a process of trial and error. But once you’ve got that balance, your mood and wellbeing will start to improve.

Don't Underestimate The Power Of Keeping Active And Eating Right

Not only will being active keep you physically fit, it’s also a huge mood booster too. Exercising regularly releases endorphins which will consequently boost your mood. You’ll also find you want to reach for the bottle a lot less after exercising, and you might make healthier food choices, too. Exercise combined with a healthy diet can have a positive impact on both your mental and physical health. If you're feeling down, take a look at these 6 ways to improve your emotional and mental well-being every day.
